What are you just now realizing about raising bilingual kids or teaching your children a second language? I will always be learning and growing, as a mother and teacher and human being. That speaking it is a way of connecting not only with more people around them, but with their joyful childhood. It’s our job to connect it to so much joy and love and comfort that it feels like a second home to them. We can’t force them to speak a language if they don’t want to. I dream of my kids continuing on with their bilingualism, but I know they might not choose that for themselves one day. It’s okay if I struggle with pronouncing certain words after years of trying, it’s okay if I forget how to say something. I’m just now realizing that if I give them that grace, I can extend it to myself. They can make mistakes, forget words, mispronounce things. I am always telling my kids they don’t need to be perfect. They have a lifetime to learn, embrace that.Ģ. You’re not too late, it is okay if they embrace Spanglish, you are not a failure if they don’t know as much as you wished they would at this moment. Let the journey unfold, take the pressure off. I studied best practices, attended conferences, wrote curriculum…I did all the things.Īnd still when raising my own bilingual kids I am constantly learning and relearning new things about language acquisition.ġ. I spent years teaching kids of all ages Spanish in classrooms throughout the US. ♥️Īs a Spanish teacher, I have dedicated my entire life to language education. It is a gift of connection, and joy, and seeing the world through a kaleidoscope of possibility - don’t let it be anything else. Language learning shouldn’t be rushed, it shouldn’t be a deadline, we shouldn’t feel guilty or like we’re not good enough, or not doing enough. When you have the bandwidth and the motivation to teach your kids another language with joy and love, that is the best time.Īnd if you’re that parent that feels spread so thin already but you really want to make it happen - remember that music, screen time, podcasts, and apps are all your friends! Just providing a little bit of intentional Spanish input with those easy resources each week can have a lasting impact. My ability to connect with others isn’t worse off because I learned Spanish after the age of six. BUT, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. It will also shift the way they relate to that language in an amazing way if they grow up with it from a young age. Older kids, teens, and adults learn new languages all the time. ![]() ![]() It makes us feel like a clock is ticking, when in reality it isn’t. It isn’t helpful, or empowering, or inspiring. You get guilt tripped, and anxious, and rushed, and fear-mongered with that narrative. You never hear the full story with that narrative. I know, I know, there is a critical language period between the ages of 0-6 and it is a time of rapid linguistic development in children and brain growth and is the IDEAL time for kids to learn a second language…BUT… The absolute best time to teach your kids a second language is when you have the bandwidth to do so.
